Studio log, week 2: AI chat applications in Arbeo, and Columbus listings that refresh themselves

9 changes shipped across 2 codebases last week. Small number... but one of them was a big one for Arbeo.

Arbeo: apply by chatting

When you post a job in Arbeo, you can now choose how people apply. A normal form, or an AI chat.

The chat is there to get what a CV doesn't tell you. It reads the CV the candidate uploads, then asks about it. What happened in that last role, what roadblocks they hit, how they work with a team when it's remote versus on-site. In my testing it goes deeper than I expected.

Candidates sign in with Google or LinkedIn in a popup, so they don't lose their place, and the chat keeps its size and scroll while they type.

On the recruiter side:

  • Scoring runs when they submit. The AI analysis and fit score are ready by the time you open the application.
  • You see where the score came from. The match is broken down by source: the CV, skills, the conversation and motivation. So you're not staring at one number wondering why.
  • Your job questions get their own scores. Answers to the questions you set for the role are scored one by one.
  • The whole conversation is there. A new Application Details tab shows the full chat history, and unfinished applications stay out of your view until they're submitted.

The score is there to help you decide who to talk to first. The decision's still yours.

New accounts also start with a ready-made set of pipeline stages, so you can start moving candidates on day one.

Client work

Columbus REALTORS®: property listings, events, and the agent and office directories now refresh on a schedule. Events update every hour, listings twice a day, and the directories overnight, so the site stays in step with the association's own data without anyone pressing a button.

If you need something like this built for your industry, this is what we do.

One thing I learned

Just because AI can interview someone doesn't mean it should.

We could add a voice interview to the application. Technically it's not hard. But someone applying for a job probably isn't ready to be interviewed by an agent on the first step, and it's a lot less personal.

When you're hiring, you're hiring people. A person should interview a person. The chat is there to gather detail, not to replace that conversation... and if we ever add voice, it'll be an option you switch on, not the default.

See you next week.
