Studio log, week 14: Linear in Handl, as deep as Jira

8 changes shipped across 1 codebase last week. A short week, and all of it went into one integration.

Handl: Linear, same depth as Jira

Not every agency runs on Jira. Plenty of teams use Linear instead. So this week Linear got full support in Handl, to the same depth as Jira.

  • Link teams and projects to milestones. Point a Handl project or milestone at a Linear team or project, and its issues come through as tasks.
  • Live updates. When someone moves an issue in Linear, Handl hears about it straight away. No waiting for the next sync.
  • Story points, shown as story points. If your team estimates in points, the Estimate column shows points, not hours.
  • Task types from your labels. Bug, feature, improvement and chore labels in Linear carry across, so you can see what kind of work a milestone is made of.
  • The current cycle, picked for you. Open the Tasks tab and Handl selects your active cycle. The filters use Linear's own words too... cycles and projects, not sprints and boards.

Connecting is one sign-in from the integrations page, and the rest is picking which team or project goes with which milestone.

One thing I learned

The second integration shouldn't be the lite version.

It's tempting to build one integration properly and then do a quick "we support it too" for the next one. Ticks the box on the integrations page. But the agency on Linear doesn't care how good the Jira one is. For them, Linear is the whole product.

So the bar was parity. Whatever Handl does with Jira, it does with Linear, in Linear's own language. It took a week. That's a week well spent if it means a whole group of agencies gets the real thing.

See you next week.
